abstract distortion study references
In your reference image draw a distorted 9 block grid over the face. You’ll want to deform, twist, and stretch this first grid substantially, as is shown above. Then on a good sheet of drawing paper, draw a 9 block grid that is straight and regular. Finally, draw the face from your distorted reference grid so it aligns with the new straight grid. This process will yield a distorted drawing of the subject’s face similar to the fun house mirror examples shown below.

- Did this film make you think differently about the relationship between art and science? Why and how?
- Proteus discusses a number of intellectual, philosophical, and historical issues related to Haeckel’s inquiries. Please describe the issues that you found most interesting, and share your own thoughts on these issues.

examples of effective collages
These collages are effective because they make good use of the principles of design and composition strategies we’ve been discussing in class, such as: unity and variety, contrast, emphasis, balance, repetition, cropping, off-centering, the rule of thirds, the diagonal, and the X.

artsxpose Art21 option
In a typical semester, students enrolled in Drawing 1 and Sculpture 1 attend art events on campus in person to satisfy the artsxpose requirements. Because of COVID restrictions, most art events are canceled. In light of the limited options this semester students may satisfy an artsxpose requirement by watching an episode of Art21 and posting a written response. Instructions are below:
<2> After you’ve watched the episode, submit a thoughtful ~ 200-word response to the class website in the “artsxpose” category. Describe what was covered in the episode and tell what you found interesting, surprising, and/or challenging about it.
Students should satisfy two artsxpose requirements in the first half of the semester, and two in the second half. Watching one episode and submitting the written response counts for one artsxpose.
