These drawings are effective because they have:
- A high level of detail (achieved by careful examination of the still life)
- Crisp edges (achieved by careful erasure and handling of the pencil and graphite stick)
- Very dark shading (achieved by making a few passes with the pencil and graphite stick–it takes time!)
- Graphite has been effectively blended with a cloth and blending stump
- Erasers were used to remove smudges from the white areas
